{"id":594,"date":"2019-05-21T11:10:00","date_gmt":"2019-05-21T10:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/?p=594"},"modified":"2020-12-03T14:34:40","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T14:34:40","slug":"swansea-university-launches-into-the-cosmos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/en\/2019\/05\/21\/swansea-university-launches-into-the-cosmos\/","title":{"rendered":"Swansea University Launches into the CoSMOS"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>CoSMOS occupies the second floor of the Margam Building on the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/accommodation\/accommodation-options\/singleton-campus\/\"><strong>Singleton Campus<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong>&nbsp; &nbsp;The space is home to five major outreach and public engagement projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/furthermaths.org.uk\/wales\"><strong>Further Maths Support Programme Wales<\/strong><\/a>(FMSP) aims to increase the numbers of students studying AS\/A Level Mathematics and Further Mathematics and to generate higher numbers of students from Wales applying to study higher education courses in Mathematically-rich STEM-based subjects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/library\/archive-and-research-collections\/hocc\/\"><strong>The History of Computing Collection<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;(HoCC) houses equipment, software, archives, ephemera, oral histories, and videos. It was founded, in Autumn 2007, in order to study historically technological development and innovation and, especially, the relationship between computing technologies and people and society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/orielscience.co.uk\/\"><strong>Oriel Science<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;project takes inspiring research from the University and crafts this into compelling exhibits to showcase to the community. Oriel Science\u2019s aims are to encourage and feed the public\u2019s innate interest in science, technology and cutting-edge research, and to inspire the next generation of scientists, technicians and engineers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swansea.ac.uk\/science\/community-engagement\/s4\/\"><strong>Swansea University Science for Schools Scheme&nbsp;<\/strong><\/a>(S4) connects Key Stage 3 pupils in South Wales with university science. S4 aims to get young people excited by, and engaged in, science through free, hands-on, curiosity-driven, and research-led workshops. S4 aims to increase access to STEM learning and to improve STEM uptake and attainment in higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Technocamps is a pan-Wales project led by Swansea University which aims to inspire, motivate and engage people in Computer Science and Technology. &nbsp;Technocamps provides STEM enrichment workshops, teaching resources, teacher training, Degree Apprenticeships and a wide range of other activities, addressing shortcomings in computational education and skills identified by higher educational establishments and by industry. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CoSMOS launch event took place on the 20<sup>th<\/sup>May 2019 when the space was opened officially by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/people\/peter-halligan\">&nbsp;Professor Peter Halligan<\/a>, Chief Scientific Adviser for Wales. &nbsp;Distinguished guests were invited to tour the CoSMOS to see how it will operate and observe hands-on laboratory\/workshop sessions from both the S4 and Technocamps teams. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minister for Education,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/kirsty-williams-am\"><strong>Kirsty Williams<\/strong><\/a>, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cOur national mission for education in Wales seeks to raise standards and ensure an education system that is a source of national pride and confidence. &nbsp;Central to this is improving the way we teach subjects like science and mathematics in our schools.
