Anyone who has ever taken part in our workshops knows that we have a knack of turning complicated science and technology into fun and interesting activities in the classroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This August, we are inviting you to do something a bit different and really exciting over the summer holidays. Come along to our STEM Academy for a day of science-based activities at Swansea University. Like everyone else, we haven\u2019t been out properly for a while, so we\u2019ve had lots of time to come up with fun ideas that are sure to keep you entertained and interested. Expect treasure hunts, escape rooms, robots and rockets!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Academy is open to pupils in Year 7 and 8 and is entirely free<\/strong> thanks to funding support from the Welsh Government. It is open to all but priority will be given to female pupils if the capacity is reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

USW<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the blink of an eye, the world became digital. We can speak to people from across the world as if they’re in the same room, and share pictures, music and information online. The digital world is a fantastic place to live, but we need to keep our information safe and private…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Join us and NDEC (the National Digital Exploration Centre<\/a>) at the University of South Wales as we crack codes and learn about cyber security techniques that keep your private information private and keep us safe when surfing the web. We’ll look at how we can hide information in plain sight, send messages in private and decrypt secret messages as we hunt for clues and compete for prizes across the USW Treforest campus. Our Code Camp is running for three days on the 10th, 11th and 12th of August and is open to students aged 11-13 (Years 7 & 8). The day starts at 9.45am and runs until 3.00pm. Note: activities are the same across all three days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Academy is entirely free<\/strong> thanks to funding support from the Welsh Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wrexham<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A world of activities awaits. Can you aid Danjac the Brave on their epic journey to escape from Knightmare Castle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A combination of real-world activities and virtual interaction. In the festival booth, there will be a live stream of daring adventurer Danjac the Brave who is trapped in a Welsh castle (in a world created in Minecraft Education Edition).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Participants at the Darganfod \/\/ Discover Festival<\/a> must solve cryptographic challenges to unlock boxes and help our adventurer escape from the castle. When festival participants solve a puzzle, they will be able to unlock a box to reveal a special item (tools, potions, maps) that they can send to Danjac, the Minecraft adventurer, who can use this item to help them progress in their quest. In a 2-way interactive adventure, Danjac will discover puzzles and locked boxes that need to be solved by the finest minds in North East Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you help Danjac? Their escape depends on YOU! Think Knightmare <\/a>meets escape room meets Minecraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The activities in the quest will last a day and then we will repeat from the start on day two to a new audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bangor<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Are you ready for some micro:bit mayhem?  Using the BBC micro:bit you create a countdown timer and launch water bottle rockets to the moon! (Well, not quite).  You will see how the sensors of the microbit can be used to monitor, record and analyse aspects of its flight.  You will then go on to make an improved ‘Buzz wire’ game that includes sound and greater interactivity using further aspects of the micro:bit’s functionality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Bangor hub will be supporting the summer holiday activities being run by local authorities during July and August across various venues in North West Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start and end times are 10.00 – 15.00<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer of Smiles<\/a><\/u><\/strong> \u2013 We are taking part in Child Friendly Cardiff’s Summer of Smiles event! We will be offering unplugged activities and tech demonstrations on City Hall lawn in Cardiff on 21 July, 28 July and 4 August. Butetown Pavillion Code Club<\/u> <\/strong> \u2013 A lunchtime code club for 6 weeks from 27th July. We will be providing unplugged and plugged activities every Tuesday between 11.30am \u2013 12.30pm. The event is entirely free for attendees but booking is essential!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
