{"id":750,"date":"2017-04-07T17:02:00","date_gmt":"2017-04-07T16:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/?p=750"},"modified":"2020-12-03T13:18:28","modified_gmt":"2020-12-03T13:18:28","slug":"welsh-technoclub-to-represent-the-uk-at-the-2017-robotics-world-festival-in-st-louis-usa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/en\/2017\/04\/07\/welsh-technoclub-to-represent-the-uk-at-the-2017-robotics-world-festival-in-st-louis-usa\/","title":{"rendered":"Welsh Technoclub to Represent the UK at the 2017 Robotics World Festival in St Louis, USA"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A robotics Technoclub at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn, Carmarthenshire has been invited to represent the UK in the annual FIRST<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;Robotics World Festival taking place in St Louis USA at the end of April.&nbsp;<em>Team Lightning<\/em>&nbsp;is delighted to be the very first Welsh team to represent the UK in the 25-year history of the Robotics World Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Festival is the accumulation of a year\u2019s worth of local, national and international events with teams from over 50 countries around the world competing. The Welsh Technoclub&nbsp;<em>Team Lightning<\/em>, based at Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn in Newcastle Emlyn, was awarded&nbsp;<em>Best Robot Design<\/em>&nbsp;at the UK and Ireland competition in Bristol earlier this year and will try to repeat this success when they represent the UK at the International finals in the USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, robotics teams undertake a two-part challenge based on a real-world topic. This season, teams explored what might become possible when we work together with our ANIMAL ALLIES<sup>SM<\/sup>&nbsp;via a&nbsp;<em>Project&nbsp;<\/em>and<em>&nbsp;Robot Game<\/em>, all whilst operating under a signature set of core values emphasizing teamwork and good sportsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;<em>Project<\/em>&nbsp;sees teams research and solve real-world problems just like scientists and engineers. The&nbsp;<em>Robot Game<\/em>&nbsp;sees teams build and program an autonomous robot using a LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;MINDSTORMS<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;kit to solve a set of missions on a playing field. Each mission represents the many ways innovation and technology have enabled humans and animals to exchange learning, friendship, help, daily needs, protection, amusement, and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Team Lightning<\/em>&nbsp;consists of three Year 11 pupils: Edward Upton, Ben Dodd and Joseph Stadius. Each team member has their own key role in the team: Robotics Programming, Robotics Development, and Project Innovation, respectively. We recently sat down with the team to get their insights on their success to-date and to find out about their ambitions for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Did you ever imagine being invited to the Robotics World Festival?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/storage\/app\/media\/uploaded-files\/Preparation_For_WorldFestival_1.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cIt all really started with Mrs Ling, who was driving us to the regional competition, who said, `If you don\u2019t go on to win today, I won\u2019t be driving you home!\u2019 From that point onwards, we were particularly focused to win! We went on to win the robot design and project category which was enough to be declared the regional winners!<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cWe didn\u2019t hold high hopes to win the National event in Bristol, especially after seeing the competition on the day. However, we were overwhelmed to be awarded&nbsp;&nbsp;`Best Robot Design\u2019 and subsequently given the opportunity to compete at the World Festival!\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where did the Team name \u201cTeam Lightning\u201d come from?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThe team was first established two years ago when preparing for the 2015 Technocamps Annual Robotics Competition which that year was themed \u201cRobo Sports Cup\u201d. Its name was Ben\u2019s idea, and comes from our first robot being called \u201cZeus\u201d as it required lightning-fast reactions.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What are your ambitions with regards to the World Festival?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cTo be in the top 25% of the teams competing and potentially win the \u2018Robot Design\u2019 category! It would also be great to have positive feedback for all of our hard work.\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Technocamps Factor<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.technocamps.com\/storage\/app\/media\/uploaded-files\/Preparation_For_WorldFestival_2.png\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ysgol Gyfun Emlyn\u2019s Robotics \u2013 and more generally Computer Science \u2013 journey started back in 2012 when the Assistant Headteacher, Mrs Sarah Thomas, attended a Technocamps teacher briefing to learn about the Technocamps Robotics Competition. As part of the event, each school was loaned a LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;MINDSTORMS<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>kit (and\/or Arduino kit and\/or Raspberry Pi kit) with which to establish a Technocamps Robotics club in their school to enter into the Technocamps competition, and as Mrs Thomas says,&nbsp;<em>\u201cFrom that point we have not looked back!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cAs part of our robotics journey, we have competed annually at the National Technocamps Robotics final and were thrilled to be crowned the champions this past year, against other very strong Technocamps Robotics clubs from scores of other Welsh schools. We repeated this success in the regional FIRST<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;LEGO<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>League (FLL) Robotics competition \u2013 against many of the same Technocamps Robotics clubs \u2013 and then at the UK Finals in February. We are eternally grateful to Technocamps for all of their support over the past many years which has made our club\u2019s achievements possible.\u201d<\/em>&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Headteacher, Mr Hugh Thomas, notes,&nbsp;\u201cThe school is enormously proud of the boys in getting this far in the competition. &nbsp;They have worked tirelessly on the project since the beginning &#8211; building the robot and developing their project idea \u2013 and it has evidently paid off. &nbsp;We know that they will do a good job of<em> representing the school and wish them well in St Louis.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arranging the trip to America has not been straightforward, and the team have been working non-stop to secure the more than \u00a35,000 sponsorship needed to fund their trip. A range of local and national organisations have donated towards the fund including: Technocamps, the IET, Cier Cawdor Cars, Phillp Ling Estates, Quinetiq, Cyngor Y Dref and Small Holding Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;The World Festival is fast approaching.
