On Wednesday 6 April 2022, we held our first Game of Codes final event since 2019. After two years of cancelled events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we welcomed fifty pupils from across Wales to the final round of our annual coding competition in Cardiff University\u2019s new state-of-the-art Abacws building.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, we asked participants to create a piece of software under the theme Combating Climate Change. Our Game of Codes competition is an opportunity for pupils to develop their problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills while improving their knowledge of computer programming in a fun and inventive way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The challenge was to create a piece of software under the theme Combating Climate Change and pupils were invited to enter as a team or individuals. The software needed to have an original design in any coding language (Scratch, Javascript, etc) in the form of a game, website, app, quiz, or animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ahead of the final event, entries were asked to submit a poster presentation and include a description of how the software was created, who did what and what steps were taken to create the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the final event on Wednesday, entrants took part in two workshops: one unplugged and one based on coding. The judges assessed the work based on how well the teams worked together, whether the software was innovative and creative, and how the entrants targeted their audiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The best entries received some exciting Technocamps prizes including a special prize of a VIP invitation to the official Abacws Launch event including a lecture by TV celebrity and mathematician Hannah Fry on April 27th 2022. The winners were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Best Team – Global Village
Best Individual – Henry Naylor
Best for Team Work – Cad Coders, Llangattwg Community School
People\u2019s Choice (decided on by other entrants) – Star Wars<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Game of Codes judge Dr Catherine Teehan said, \u201cI am blown away by the standard of entries, deciding on a winner was incredibly difficult!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
