Tell us a little about yourself and your work.
My name is Abby. I’m a Cardiff University graduate and currently work with the Computer Science Outreach Team at Cardiff University. My role involves delivering workshops in schools, developing new resources, and helping people get involved in and excited about the wonderful world of Computer Science!
How did you get started working with Technocamps?
I started working with Technocamps after finishing university. I’ve been in my role for just under a year and a half now, time flies when you’re having fun!
Which part of the work with Technocamps has been most beneficial for you, and why?
When I was in school, I attended a Swansea University Taster Day held by Technocamps, and it had a huge impact on me. I think I was in Year 8 at the time, and that day really opened my eyes to computer science. I eventually chose to take GCSE Computer Science, and the rest is history! I can confidently say that Technocamps is the reason I became interested in computer science and went to university in the first place.
How do you think the skills and knowledge provided by Technocamps are used in your field or day-to-day work?
I use the skills and knowledge I gained through Technocamps every day when delivering computer science workshops to a wide range of audiences. Without Technocamps, I wouldn’t have had the understanding or confidence to engage with the subject or appreciate how important it truly is.
Can you share a specific moment or project that stands out as particularly meaningful during your time with Technocamps?
My favourite part of the job is delivering workshops. Every class has that moment when everything clicks and students start to see their work come together. That moment is always the most rewarding, when workshop attendees begin to really see the world of computer science. It’s a privilege to share my knowledge, and the enthusiasm in those sessions is always incredibly meaningful.
How has your involvement with Technocamps influenced your career path, opportunities, or future ambitions?
My career path would have been completely different without Technocamps. I used to think that university wasn’t “for people like me” and that I didn’t belong in tech. The Technocamps taster day I attended in school showed me that I could go to university and study computer science. I wouldn’t be where I am today without Technocamps!
What advice would you give to someone thinking about pursuing a career in computer science or a related field?
My advice is to never stop learning. There is always more to explore or practice, and that’s the best part of computer science. Good luck!
